Amiens is a city in northern France and the capital of the Somme department, set along the Somme River amid the Picardy countryside. Its historic centre is dominated by Amiens Cathedral, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in France and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Waterways are also central to the city's character, particularly in the Hortillonnages, a network of gardens and canals on former marshland. Amiens combines monumental architecture with quieter residential streets, riverside paths, markets, and green spaces, making its landscape more varied than its cathedral and historic centre alone suggest.

Amiens has a strong literary and cultural identity associated with Jules Verne, who lived in the city and whose former home is now a museum. The city also preserves important medieval and early modern architecture, including the Saint-Leu district beside the Somme, where former mill buildings and narrow streets reflect the area's relationship with the river. Amiens Cathedral has shaped the city's religious and architectural history for centuries, while the nearby belfry forms another notable landmark. Local traditions are also reflected in markets and the annual Fête dans la Ville, which brings street theatre and performances to the city.

Amiens Cathedral is the city's principal landmark, notable for its scale, sculpted west façade, and richly decorated interior. The Hortillonnages provide a very different environment, with small cultivated plots separated by canals and traditionally reached by flat-bottomed boats. In the Saint-Leu quarter, restaurants and cafés line waterways close to the cathedral, while the Parc Saint-Pierre offers paths and open lawns beside the Somme. The Musée de Picardie contains collections covering archaeology, fine arts, and regional history. Just outside the city, the Somme Valley provides opportunities for walking and cycling through wetlands, villages, and farmland.

Amiens has several foods associated with the Picardy region. Ficelle picarde is a savoury crêpe filled with ham, mushrooms, and cream, while pâté de canard d'Amiens is a traditional duck pâté enclosed in pastry. Macarons d'Amiens are small almond-based sweets with a soft texture and are another local speciality. The Hortillonnages also have a long tradition of market gardening, with vegetables cultivated on small plots in the former marshes and historically transported by boat. This unusual agricultural landscape remains one of the city's most distinctive features and continues to supply local markets with produce.
