Crater Lake National Park lies in southern Oregon and centers on one of the deepest and clearest lakes in the world. The lake fills the caldera of Mount Mazama, a volcano that collapsed nearly 8,000 years ago after a massive eruption. For the Klamath Tribes, the site holds deep cultural meaning, with oral histories describing the mountain’s destruction and the creation of the lake.

The landscape is defined by steep caldera walls that plunge directly into intensely blue water, fed only by rain and snow. Features such as Wizard Island, a cinder cone rising from the lake, and Phantom Ship, a jagged rock formation, add depth to the stark setting. Rim Drive and hiking trails trace the edge of the caldera, offering changing perspectives shaped by light, weather, and season.

Crater Lake has a quiet, almost reverent atmosphere that encourages stillness and reflection. The absence of rivers flowing in or out heightens the sense of isolation, as if the lake exists apart from the surrounding world.
