Nestled in the heart of the Black Hills, Custer, South Dakota is a small town with big stories. Established in 1875 during the Black Hills Gold Rush, Custer holds the distinction of being the oldest town in the region still in existence. Today, it serves as a gateway to some of South Dakota’s most iconic sights. With historic buildings, locally owned shops, and friendly diners lining Mount Rushmore Road, it offers a laid-back atmosphere that balances Old West charm with modern-day hospitality.

Just minutes from town, Custer State Park spans over 70,000 acres and is home to one of the largest publicly owned bison herds in the world. Visitors often encounter these 2,000-pound animals up close on the Wildlife Loop Road, sometimes so close that traffic comes to a halt. The park also features granite peaks, scenic drives like the Needles Highway, and hidden lakes perfect for kayaking or picnicking. Hikers can tackle trails such as Black Elk Peak, the highest point east of the Rockies, offering panoramic views that stretch across three states on a clear day.
