Killybegs is a coastal town in County Donegal, set around a deep natural harbor on the southwest coast. It is known primarily for its fishing industry and is one of Ireland’s principal fishing ports, with large vessels regularly using its sheltered waters. The harbor remains central to the town’s identity, while the surrounding Donegal coastline provides a setting of rocky headlands, coves, and open Atlantic views. Killybegs also serves as a convenient base for exploring nearby parts of southwest Donegal, including the communities of Kilcar and Carrick and the dramatic landscape around Sliabh Liag.

The town has a strong maritime heritage that extends beyond commercial fishing. A local heritage walking tour explores sites including the remains of medieval St. Catherine’s Church and graveyard, St. Mary’s Church of the Visitation, an old corn store, and a historic bishop’s residence. Killybegs Maritime and Heritage Centre has also preserved local skills and traditions, including the making of Donegal carpets, which were produced by skilled workers in the community. These sites illustrate how religious traditions, craft industries, fishing, and seafaring have all contributed to the town’s local identity.

The coastline around Killybegs provides access to some of Donegal’s best-known natural landmarks. Boat trips from the harbor travel along the Atlantic coast toward Sliabh Liag, whose cliffs rise more than 600 meters above the sea. Views from the water also include Rotten Island Lighthouse and St. John’s Point Lighthouse. On land, nearby walking routes lead through the hills and coastal landscapes of southwest Donegal. The area supports marine wildlife as well, and boat excursions from Killybegs can provide opportunities to see dolphins, seabirds, and other species in their natural surroundings.

Seafood is an important part of Killybegs’ food culture, reflecting the town’s working harbor and access to Irish waters. Local businesses offer dishes featuring fish such as haddock, mackerel, and crab, while seafood producers provide opportunities to learn about the fishing industry and sample locally sourced products. The town also sits close to Donegal’s traditional craft and textile communities, where local wool and knitwear remain important products. Killybegs therefore offers a particularly direct connection between food, maritime work, traditional craftsmanship, and the coastal environment of County Donegal.
