Grímsey is a small island in the Arctic Ocean, about 40 kilometers off the north coast of Iceland and the only part of the country crossed by the Arctic Circle. The island covers roughly 5.3 square kilometers and has a small settlement centered around its harbor. Fishing remains important to local life, while tourism has become another source of activity. Its exposed position gives Grímsey a strong connection to the sea, with open horizons, grassy slopes, basalt formations, and high coastal cliffs surrounding much of the island.

Grímsey has a long history of settlement and a local identity shaped by fishing, farming, and the use of marine resources. The island also has an unusual association with chess, a tradition that became part of its cultural reputation through the influence of American chess patron Daniel Willard Fiske. Miðgarður Church stands near the village and reflects the island’s longstanding religious traditions. The original church building was lost to fire, and plans for a replacement have involved the local community. The island’s small population gives everyday life a distinctly close-knit character.

The main attraction is the Arctic Circle itself, marked by the large Orbis et Globus sculpture on the northern part of the island. Because the Arctic Circle gradually shifts position, the sphere is moved to reflect its changing location. Grímsey is also known for its extensive seabird colonies, particularly Atlantic puffins, which nest in burrows along the cliffs during the warmer months. Walking routes cross the island from the village toward the northern tip and continue along the eastern cliffs to a lighthouse, with views of basalt columns, sea stacks, and the surrounding ocean.

Food on Grímsey reflects its fishing community, with seafood playing an important role in local life. Visitors can find a small café, restaurant, shop, guesthouses, and swimming pool in the village, although services remain limited compared with mainland destinations. The island’s birdlife is another defining feature, with numerous seabird species using its cliffs for nesting. In summer, the Arctic location brings exceptionally long daylight, while winter offers dark skies that can provide opportunities to see the northern lights. Grímsey can be reached by ferry from Dalvík or by flights from Akureyri, making the journey part of the experience.
