Leleuvia Island is a small island in Fiji’s Lomaiviti group, located off the eastern coast of Viti Levu between Bau, Moturiki and Ovalau. Access is by boat from Bau Landing, with the crossing taking about 40 minutes. Sandy shoreline, coastal forest and surrounding reef define the island, while development is limited mainly to Leleuvia Island Resort and its traditional-style bures. The island’s position within Lomaiviti also makes it a useful base for exploring a part of Fiji closely associated with Indigenous leadership, maritime travel and the historic communities of the central islands.

Leleuvia’s cultural setting is strongly connected with Fiji’s seafaring traditions. Outrigger canoeing and canoe sailing are practiced around the island, continuing skills that have long linked communities across the Pacific. Nearby Bau is one of Fiji’s important chiefly islands, while Ovalau is home to Levuka, a UNESCO World Heritage town with a significant place in the country’s political and commercial heritage. The waters surrounding Leleuvia are known locally as Waisiliva, meaning “Silver Waters.” Yaqona, or kava, gatherings and traditional lovo meals also provide opportunities to experience customs that remain part of Fijian social life.

Coral reef begins about ten metres from Leleuvia’s beach, allowing snorkeling directly from the shore, while the Daveta Levu Passage is among the nearby areas used for diving. The island also has a varied coastal plant community, with more than 120 species of vascular plants recorded. Beach mahogany, coconut palms, pandanus, beach hibiscus and beach gardenia are among the plants found in its littoral forest. Walking paths pass through the wooded interior, and a sandbank becomes exposed at low tide. Kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing provide other ways to explore the surrounding shallow waters.

Food on Leleuvia includes dishes prepared using the traditional lovo method, in which heated rocks are placed in a shallow earth pit. Fish and chicken wrapped in leaves are cooked with root crops and vegetables such as dalo, cassava, pumpkin and potato, while coconut milk is prepared as part of the meal. The island resort also serves a fixed daily menu with Fijian influences.
