Argostoli sits on the west coast of Kefalonia, Greece’s largest Ionian Island, where a natural harbor meets the Koutavos Lagoon and a waterfront lined with cafés, tavernas, and shops. As the island’s capital, Argostoli blends everyday island life with moments of surprise, from sea turtles surfacing by fishing boats at dawn to historic sites hidden among palm trees and pedestrian streets. Its harbor promenade is a favorite place to stroll at sunset, watching fishing boats slide onto the water as local life unfolds.

One of the town’s most striking features is De Bosset Bridge that crosses the lagoon and is said to be one of the longest stone bridges over the sea in Europe. Walking or cycling across it gives wide views of both the calm inland waters and the open Ionian Sea beyond, and early mornings often bring sightings of loggerhead sea turtles gliding near the surface.
