Koggala is a coastal town in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, located between the Indian Ocean and the wide waters of Koggala Lake. The area is defined by sandy beaches, wetlands, small islands, and lowland vegetation, with the lagoon forming an important part of its landscape. Koggala offers a quieter coastal setting close to Galle and Habaraduwa, while its combination of ocean and inland waterways gives the town a distinctive character. The lake also supports fishing and small-scale boat activity, linking the surrounding communities closely to the coastal environment.

Koggala has a strong literary and cultural identity through Martin Wickramasinghe, one of Sri Lanka’s most important Sinhala-language writers, who was born in the area. His former family home is now part of the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum Complex, which presents aspects of traditional village life. Its collection includes agricultural and fishing equipment, pottery, masks, puppets, musical instruments, clothing, religious objects, and household items. The museum also preserves a traditional rural setting, helping visitors understand the customs, crafts, and everyday practices associated with southern Sri Lanka.

Koggala Lake is one of the area’s principal attractions, with boat trips exploring its waterways, islands, mangroves, and surrounding wetlands. The lagoon provides habitat for fish and a variety of birds, making the waterway an important part of the local environment. Along the nearby coast, traditional stilt fishing is a distinctive sight, with fishermen positioned on poles above shallow coastal waters. Another notable site is Kataluva Purvarama Maha Viharaya, a Buddhist temple known for its painted murals depicting religious stories as well as musicians, dancers, and scenes connected with local life.

Southern Sri Lankan cooking is well represented in Koggala, with seafood, rice, coconut, vegetables, and aromatic spices forming the basis of many local dishes. The surrounding region is also associated with low-country tea cultivation, while fishing remains an important part of coastal life. Koggala has an unusual literary connection through Martin Wickramasinghe’s novel Madol Doova, whose setting reflects the islands and rural landscapes familiar to the author. The Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum Complex further preserves this connection through its displays, traditional buildings, and collection of indigenous plants.
