New Plymouth is a coastal city on the western side of New Zealand’s North Island, facing the Tasman Sea beneath the volcanic cone of Taranaki Maunga. It is the main urban centre of the Taranaki region and combines a working port and commercial centre with parks, beaches and farmland close to the city. Taranaki Maunga dominates views inland, while the coast provides a contrasting edge of black-sand beaches and rocky shore. New Plymouth is also known for its extensive public gardens and for a coastal walkway that links several waterfront neighbourhoods and recreation areas.

The area is part of the traditional rohe of Taranaki Māori, and Māori history remains central to the identity of the city and surrounding region. Puke Ariki, New Plymouth’s museum, library and visitor centre, presents collections relating to tangata whenua, regional history and natural science. Nearby Pukaka Marsland Hill contains memorials and has historical associations with conflicts over land. The name Ngāmotu is also closely connected with the New Plymouth area. Contemporary Māori art and language are visible throughout the city, while the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Len Lye Centre contribute a strong modern visual-arts presence.

The 13-kilometre New Plymouth Coastal Walkway follows the Tasman Sea and passes the curved Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, designed to frame views of Taranaki Maunga. Pukekura Park covers 52 hectares near the city centre, with lakes, walking paths, native and exotic plants, and the adjacent Brooklands area.
