Addu City is the southernmost urban area of the Maldives, spread across six inhabited islands at the southern end of Addu Atoll. Located close to the Equator, it differs from many Maldivian destinations through its larger islands, interconnected roads, local neighborhoods, wetlands, and established communities. Hithadhoo, the largest district, contains much of the city’s population and natural landscape, while Gan is home to Gan International Airport. The city combines tropical vegetation, beaches, lagoons, mangroves, and coral reefs with everyday island life, making it one of the Maldives’ more geographically varied destinations.

Addu has a distinct southern Maldivian cultural identity, including local traditions, food, and a dialect of Dhivehi. Fishing, farming, weaving, and maritime trade have historically played important roles in community life. The islands also have a strong British military legacy, particularly on Gan, where a former Royal Air Force base left behind roads, buildings, and other remnants that remain part of the landscape. The former RAF facilities have since been adapted for civilian uses, including tourism and Gan International Airport. Hithadhoo Mosque and traditional settlements provide further insight into the religious and architectural heritage of the city.

Addu Nature Park in Hithadhoo protects the Eydhigali Kilhi wetlands and the Koattey area, providing a different landscape from the beaches and reefs typically associated with the Maldives. Visitors can explore mangroves and waterways by canoe, walk along nature trails, and cycle through the surrounding vegetation. Offshore, Addu’s protected reefs support manta rays, eagle rays, reef sharks, turtles, and a wide range of tropical fish. The British Loyalty wreck, located between Maradhoo and Hithadhoo, is another notable underwater site. A road network links several islands, allowing visitors to explore much of the city by bicycle or vehicle.

Addu cuisine reflects the wider Maldivian reliance on fish, coconut, rice, and locally available spices, while southern cooking has its own regional character. Fish curries, coconut-based dishes, roshi, and sweet and savory snacks are commonly found in local eateries. The city is also known for its extensive coconut palms, breadfruit trees, mangroves, and tropical vegetation. One of Addu’s unusual geographical features is that its islands and reefs form a naturally sheltered atoll with several channels, creating conditions that support diving and marine activities across much of the year. Its position near the Equator adds another distinctive element to the southern Maldivian setting.

Vaavu Atoll
Vaavu Atoll lies south of Malé and is known for its relatively small population, numerous uninhabited islands, clear lagoons, and extensive coral reefs. Felidhoo is the administrative capital, while Thinadhoo, Keyodhoo, and Fulidhoo are among the better-known inhabited islands. The atoll has a quieter character than the more developed areas closer to the capital, with guesthouses, fishing communities, and resorts spread across separate islands.
