Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is one of Africa’s most vibrant and unpredictable cities. Sprawling along the banks of the Congo River, it’s the third-largest city on the continent and pulses with music, art, and personality at every turn. Across the river lies Brazzaville, making Kinshasa part of the only pair of national capitals facing each other across a single waterway.

Music is the lifeblood of Kinshasa. The city is the birthplace of Congolese rumba, a genre that shaped dance floors across Africa and beyond. At local clubs and open-air bars, live bands keep the rhythm going late into the night with electric guitars and powerful vocals. The city’s music scene is also home to the Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste, Africa’s only all-Black classical symphony orchestra, founded against all odds and performing Beethoven alongside traditional Congolese compositions. Visitors can catch rehearsals or concerts that are as moving as they are unexpected.
