Majete Wildlife Reserve is a protected area in southern Malawi, located in the Lower Shire Valley west of the Shire River. Its landscape includes miombo woodland, dry savanna, rocky hills, seasonal streams, and riverine vegetation along the Shire and Mkulumadzi rivers. Majete is particularly significant for the restoration of wildlife populations that had previously declined severely. Today, the reserve supports a broad range of large mammals and has become an important conservation area within Malawi. Its relatively dry environment gives Majete a different appearance from the wetter landscapes around Lake Malawi and Liwonde National Park.

Majete’s modern identity is closely connected to conservation and surrounding rural communities. The reserve is managed by African Parks in partnership with Malawi’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife, with programs covering wildlife protection, habitat management, tourism, and community development. Local residents participate through employment, conservation education, enterprise projects, and other initiatives linked to the protected area. This relationship is especially important because communities around the reserve depend heavily on agriculture and natural resources. Majete has become a prominent Malawian example of rebuilding an ecosystem while creating economic opportunities connected to conservation.

Wildlife restoration has returned elephants, black rhinoceroses, lions, leopards, and other species to Majete, allowing the reserve to support the animals commonly described as Africa’s Big Five. Visitors may also encounter buffalo, sable antelope, kudu, waterbuck, impala, warthogs, and numerous smaller mammals. The Shire River supports crocodiles, hippopotamuses, and abundant birdlife, while higher ground provides broad views across the wooded valley. Game drives and guided walks are common ways to explore the reserve, and boat excursions offer another perspective on wildlife and vegetation along the river.
