Just 30 kilometers from Asunción, Areguá welcomes visitors with cobbled streets, colonial facades, and a creative energy that has earned it the title of Paraguay’s “City of Arts.” Known for its thriving artist community and traditional crafts, Areguá is perched on the edge of Lake Ypacaraí and framed by rolling hills and red clay cliffs. Whether you're arriving for the annual strawberry fair or simply passing through on a weekend escape, Areguá invites slow walks, open studios, and conversation over tereré under the shade of mango trees.

Areguá’s most iconic feature is its clay. For generations, local artisans have shaped the region’s red earth into whimsical ceramic figures, pots, and sculptures. The town’s Avenida del Lago is lined with workshops where visitors can watch pieces being made by hand or even try molding a piece themselves. Every October, the city hosts the Expo Artesanía, attracting craftspeople from across the country to showcase ceramics, leatherwork, embroidery, and woven goods. It’s a vibrant celebration of craftsmanship and cultural pride.
