Abilene is no-nonsense and traditional, but it's just as capable of having a good time as any rip-roaring cowpoke. When you're in Abilene, take time to see the Abilene Zoo, particularly the Texas Plains exhibit, a unique collection of species native to that part of the country (if you've never seen a javelina, here's your chance).

Contemplate stops as well at Ft. Phantom Hill, the site of an 1850s Army post; Buffalo Gap Historic Village, a gathering of restored historical buildings, including a 19th-century doctor's office, a bank and a railroad depot; and Abilene State Recreation Area, that has a spring-fed pool for swimming or just cooling off. If you're in town in May, do not miss the Western Heritage Classic, a rodeo where all the cowboys are really cowboys. The West Texas Fair is held in Abilene every September.

Fun fact, Abilene is a city located in two counties: Taylor and Jones.
