Kansas City offers more than meets the eye. Located at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, this city blends its industrial roots with surprising pockets of creativity, flavor, and local pride. A great place to start is the historic Strawberry Hill neighborhood, where Eastern European immigrants once settled. Today, visitors can tour the Strawberry Hill Museum & Cultural Center inside a 19th-century Victorian mansion, which showcases Croatian, Slovenian, and Slovak artifacts and offers homemade povitica bread on select weekends.

Food plays a big role in the city’s identity, and no trip is complete without sampling its barbecue. While its Missouri neighbor may get more attention, Kansas City holds its own with iconic joints like Slap’s BBQ, a local favorite known for brisket that draws lines out the door.

Outdoors, the 1,500-acre Wyandotte County Lake Park offers scenic views, fishing spots, and quiet trails just minutes from downtown. It’s also home to the Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library, one of only a handful of environmental learning libraries in the U.S. Those interested in regional history can explore the Quindaro Ruins, the remains of a once-thriving abolitionist town and stop on the Underground Railroad, now preserved as a National Commemorative Site.
