Kapalua is a coastal resort community on the northwest side of Maui, Hawai‘i, set between the West Maui Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Its landscape includes sheltered bays, volcanic slopes, former agricultural land, and coastal trails, with views toward neighboring islands on clear days. The area is known for its beaches and golf courses, but its setting also includes protected shoreline and native vegetation. Kapalua lies within the wider Lahaina and West Maui region, where the landscape transitions quickly from developed coastal areas to steep, forested mountain terrain.

Kapalua’s cultural landscape reflects the long history of Native Hawaiian settlement on Maui. The surrounding area was once part of a larger agricultural landscape where Hawaiians cultivated crops using systems adapted to rainfall, streams, and volcanic soils. Honokahua, near Kapalua, contains an important Native Hawaiian burial site that is recognized as a significant cultural landscape. The area also retains connections to traditional fishing and gathering along the coast. Later development transformed much of the region into agricultural and resort land, including extensive pineapple cultivation before the area became associated more strongly with tourism.

The coastline around Kapalua contains several notable natural attractions. Kapalua Bay is a sheltered crescent-shaped beach bordered by rocky points and clear coastal water, while Oneloa Bay and D.T. Fleming Beach provide additional stretches of shoreline. The Kapalua Coastal Trail follows the coast past lava formations, tide pools, and former agricultural areas. Honolua Bay, just north of Kapalua, lies within a Marine Life Conservation District and is known for its reef habitat and seasonal sea conditions. The nearby West Maui Mountains rise sharply inland, creating a dramatic change from the open Pacific coastline to steep volcanic terrain.

Food in Kapalua draws from Hawaiian, Pacific, and contemporary island cooking, with seafood, locally grown fruit, taro, sweet potatoes, and other regional ingredients appearing in restaurants. Maui-grown products such as coffee, tropical fruit, and vegetables also contribute to the local food culture. Kapalua is closely associated with golf, with courses built across former agricultural lands and coastal slopes. Another distinctive feature is the area’s history of pineapple farming: the name Kapalua is associated with an earlier agricultural estate, and remnants of that landscape remain visible around the resort community, linking the modern coastline with Maui’s agricultural past.
