Tozeur is an oasis city in southwestern Tunisia, located on the northern edge of the Sahara near the vast salt lake of Chott el-Jerid. Its extensive date-palm groves create a green belt around a city otherwise surrounded by dry plains and desert landscapes. Tozeur is especially recognized for its distinctive brick architecture, with geometric patterns formed from small, locally made bricks decorating walls and gateways. The city serves as an important center for the Jerid region, where oasis agriculture, traditional crafts, and desert culture remain closely connected to daily life.

Tozeur has a strong cultural identity shaped by oasis farming and the traditions of the Jerid region. Date cultivation is central to local agriculture, while irrigation channels distribute water through the palm groves to support crops grown beneath the trees. The old quarter, Ouled el-Hadef, preserves narrow lanes and houses decorated with patterned brickwork. Dar Cherait and the nearby Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions provide further insight into regional customs, clothing, crafts, and domestic life. Traditional architecture often uses locally produced brick arranged in repeating geometric designs, creating recognizable textures across the historic neighborhoods.

The oasis is one of Tozeur’s principal attractions, with thousands of date palms surrounding gardens where fruit trees and vegetables grow beneath the canopy. The Chott el-Jerid salt lake extends across a broad depression southwest of the city, producing expansive views of salt-covered ground and changing colors under the strong desert light. Nearby, the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza, and Midès offer rocky valleys, springs, cliffs, and waterfalls. Tozeur is also associated with the desert landscapes used as filming locations for several major productions, while the Star Wars site at Ong Jemel lies farther into the surrounding Sahara.

Dates, particularly the Deglet Nour variety, are central to Tozeur’s food culture and agricultural economy. Local cuisine includes couscous, lamb, vegetables, bread, olive oil, and dishes flavored with harissa and regional spices. The palm groves also produce other fruits and provide shade for smaller crops cultivated beneath the trees. A distinctive local craft is the use of palm materials for baskets, mats, and other practical objects. Tozeur’s brickwork is another unusual feature: small bricks are placed in projecting and recessed patterns to create geometric decoration across facades, doorways, and walls, giving the city a recognizable architectural style.
