Darjeeling

Darjeeling sits along a ridge in the eastern Himalaya, shaped by colonial history and long-standing ties to the surrounding hills. Established as a British hill station in the 19th century, it later became a center for tea cultivation and a meeting point for Nepali, Tibetan, Bengali, and indigenous Lepcha cultures. This mix gives the town a layered identity that feels both regional and outward-looking.

The landscape is steep and intimate. Tea gardens spill down hillsides in tight patterns, broken by forest patches and narrow roads that follow the contours of the land. On clear mornings, views stretch toward Kanchenjunga, grounding daily life in the presence of high mountains even when they remain partly hidden by cloud.

Darjeeling’s atmosphere is cool, both in climate and tempo. Life moves to the rhythm of weather, trains, and seasonal harvests, with cafés, markets, and monasteries acting as social anchors.
